magical

you know those cool, clear summer nights that you just can't make yourself go inside?  the breeze is perfect, the grass is plush, and the clouds have unveiled a stunning navy-blue sheet, speckled with tiny, yet brilliant diamonds, more perfect than any prize from Tiffany's.  it's a moment that surpasses serenity, fuels existentialist thinking, and arouses childlike wonder.  it's the most magical of moments, (at least for me), only recently rivaled by christmastime in the city.

after 5 months in new york, i feel qualified to finally offer an opinion.  it's filthy.  mind you, i have a slight preference (HAH!) for cleanliness, but even the messiest of human beings would agree with this observation.  the streets are infested by pigeons, while subways are crawling with rats.  sidewalks are plastered with gum, irresponsibly discarded fliers + wrappers, and spilled-now-congealed frappuccinos.  bed bug infestations require laundering/cleaning of ANY new purchases.  smog and human traffic make breathing fresh, virgin air nearly impossible.  However, even with week-old blackened snow piles and the bustle of holiday tourism in the city, the christmas spirit miraculously masks it all.

my best friend came for a much-needed visit that not only made my little heart happy, but allowed me to be a tourist in my new home.  my eyes were wide with each department store window, oversized christmas tree, and sparkling garland.  i swear i even saw sugar plum fairies weave through the horrendous line of anxious ice-skaters outside bryant park.  it was nothing short of magical, and as i said, i don't use that adjective lightly.

our week together, though it occurred 12.29-1.3, included all the important holiday activities--most importantly: ice skating in central park (the BEST EVER!!).  Also, while we missed the actual blizzard that hit december 27th, we witnessed it's destruction (or beautification--glass half-full, right?) of the city.  but here are a few of the more 'magical' shots from the week (and one of the blizzard's trail).  i won't bore with further detail.  enjoy my almost starry-summer-night-feeling experience.

so i wanted to add some old-hollywood glamour photos with this to make it more tied to fashion, but who said fashion can't relate to the magic of the holiday spirit? i feel a sparkly, high-contrast, ostentatious collection coming on....

hope everyone has a very happy 2011.  make a resolution to keep this cheer we are all so obviously starved for come each december.

my fabulous space

So..... now that i know fashion school = toobusytodoanythingelseEVER.... i am taking advantage of being sick and posting. finally

This is my space. i heart it with all my money. (being willing to sacrifice my life's savings for a sweet set-up in the city is TOTALLY love, right?)  The photos below are my room and my roommate's fantabulous animals.  notice that my clothes, decorations, books, and dvds are not only color coded, but THEY MATCH!!  i need an intervention. really.
i guess my over-stimulation with all these bright colors are the reason i only dress myself in black, grey, white, and brown these days....

cross-section of my color-coded splendor.

Jersey, the narcoleptic shar pei mix.      my test outfits that didn't make the cut today.

and of course a couple more views....

enjoy the blinding brightness.

yep, it's real. yep, i saw it.

just sayin':
no copyrt infringement. i took this!
I SAW LADY GAGA'S GRAMMY'S DRESS IN PERSON AND IT IS JUST AS KILLER AS ON SCREEN!

almost as cool as seeing her. in the flesh {not nude, mind you... preferably in THIS dress}
but who's bragging? not me....

welcome to the school that never sleeps!

that was the main point of my orientation lecture today.
i was one face in a sea of optimistic, naively-confident, wannabe-designer faces.
ironically, i've never felt less self-assured.

back home i always felt confident in my wardrobe and modestly happy with my appearance.  i sought to have presence in every room, self-affirming my potential fashion design abilities.
back home, it was clear i needed to pursue fashion.

back home is the humble south, and honey, NYC is nothing. like. that.

you know those rumors about fashion school? like all the girls are bitchy? spoiled? and dress like a poodle who collided with a shredder while wearing a biker jacket?  i'm here to refute these theories.

you know those rumors about fashion students working through the night for weeks on end? vying for the most lofty internships only to be punished by an overbearing fashion guru who makes you run coffee errands and massage her feet? desperately trying to keep up with the industry's lightning-speed evolution so we aren't ignored and wasting the 40K we dropped on tuition?  i'm here to validate these theories.

new york is a dazzlingly beautiful place--but it's like one a venus fly trap for the fashion hopefuls.  It's the place that makes things happen, right? we can't resist the glamour, the people, the resources, but it comes with a very sharp bite.  these are my writings (and means) of survival, the avoidance of being eaten alive by the very thing i want the most.

{commence cheesy end-note} buckle up! it's about to be a bumpy ride!
