lady godiva

lady godiva was an anglo-saxon woman who took a bold stance against heavy taxation.  her husband, the lord, agreed to relieve the heavy taxes on the people of coventry if his lovely lady would ride through the village naked.  and she did.

this is my translation of the story into a garment.  some interpretations of the legend say that 'naked' meant that she only wore her chemise, the middle-ages undergarment/slip/thingy.  so.... next to some images of circa 1026 dress/undergarments, a woman undressing, a voluptuous nude, and a color palette of draped fabrics, i depicted a confident, modernized lady godiva in a slinky-sheer dress that drapes to the floor.  the purple is the only truly opaque part of the dress, suggesting the dropping of her luxurious robes to utter, but elegant, exposure.
