red rover

hullo, red hairsss.  i missed you so.
i heard about this edgy "inexpensive" salon down in noho at astor place and decided i just HAD to go.  midterms are over.  (well... i have ONE textile exam left, but everyone knows i won't care until the night before....)  my homework this weekend??  inspiration board, style board, press release, collect images of plaids/stripes, and create a pattern for the halter design i just draped.  pretty light weekend, considering the past 10 weeks of my life.

so naturally.... i whipped out all the easy homework (image collecting/press release) and headed to midtown for some hot yoga.  (they aren't KIDDING with that title!! seriously!! i probably dropped 3 lbs in sweat alone!!).  afterwards, feeling all gross about my sweaty hair and frumpy yoga outfit, i made the confidence-boosting, procrastinator's decision to get mah huuuurrrr did.  my friend amanda got a killer cut at this salon a couple days ago, and seeing online that color started at a mere $30, i found myself on the N train heading toward NYU.

i didn't really know what i was looking for, but i finally saw this huge sign for a downstairs hair salon at the corner of astor place and 8th ave.  i timidly stepped down from the sidewalk into what could only be described as a time capsule from 1981.  bold colored walls (green? purple?? something ludicrous).  laminate flooring.  orange counters.  about 75 hairstyling stations.  i walked up to the counter, said i wanted color, and i was promptly led to jose's chair.  jose is from bolivia, but has lived in new york since '84, and has worked at this salon for TWENTY YEARS (and he's STRAIGHT!)!!  i asked for strawberry blonde and he just said no.  it would be too expensive.  so i said red? he started mixing colors and said, "just so you know, just this color will cost you $80." eek!   dang long hair.  that's where the "starting at" price became obsolete.  But i mustn't  complain because senor jose did a marvelous job. and whether you like it on me or not, i think i'm in pretty good company (this is how i'm tying this post into fashion, hehe--clever, right?):

from top left:
alison sudol (a fine frenzy)
karen elson (i kinda like her...)
jenny lewis (rilo kiley)
tina louise (gilligan's island)

maybe i'm on my way to being just an ounce as cool as this fiery ladies. god bless the ginger.

**special thanks to redhead models for a fantastic image library of some stunning copper tresses.
